Summary:  ThumbnailCache needs a deeper review

Original Submission:  The ThumbnailCache, even so it basically works, as never 
been really tested. It currently fails at updating thumbnails if the underlying 
image has changed and it might also fail at some other tasks. Its also not as 
fast as it could be, dumping the resulting selection image to a jpeg might help.
