Details - Running the unit tests under gdb, I see this failure
base/text/pdf-text-new-destroy.c:80:F:pdf_text_new_destroy:pdf_text_new_destroy_002:0:
 Assertion 'pdf_text_new (&newtext) == PDF_EBADCONTEXT' failed

I don't see the same without gdb.

A bit of initial testing shows that the initialization check might be being 
optimized out.
