I couldn't agree more with David's comments.

In our local Linux User Group, during 13+ years in which the mailing 
list was active this kind of topics were always coming and going, mostly 
started by new users which didn't know how to properly make use or 
exploit the convenience of a mailing list.

There is nothing more convenient to receive an email into your 
device/computer without having to explicitly going to browse for 
updates. If you are one of those users which don't know how to create 
mail filters or properly handle email subscriptions then that is your 
problem to solve.

Going back to our local linux group case, a web portal was created and 
merely newbies were floating around without any relevant 
question/answers since most of the older people stayed with the mailing 
list approach. Eventually it faded away and I was glad that we kept the 
mailing list alive.

Even though I'm not active on the list, as some other members have 
pointed out, most of the questions have been answered in the past, it's 
just a matter of searching the archive.

Instead of opting for a group on Google or Facebook I would recommend to 
replicate the content of the mail server or create backup mail/web 
servers, including a RR DNS setting.

I've been in the website/email/db hosting business since '95, so I 
volunteer to keep a mirror of the site and mailing list on my server of 
this approach is chosen.
