What do you mean with "old versions"?
You certainly do not want to run a desktop-oriented
distro on a Gumstix.
I'm using OpenEmbedded and a late 2.6-series of kernels.
OpenEmbedded has replaced Buildroot and contains quite
up to date packages compared to other embedded platforms.
