Many thanks for your input.  I agree that it is a difficult question to
answer.  At this stage I know nothing, and need to learn what is possible,
and at what cost.  As a starting point I have ordered the equipment you
listed along with a GPS receiver.

That is a hard request to satisfy, since it depends on what you want to do.

I can give you a example of what I have.
Aircraft, servos, Futaba RC receiver and transmitter (72Mhz)

Ap: tinyv2
Horizontal IR sensor
Vertical IR sensor
Rate gyro

Modems:
2.4ghz xbee pro oem with whip antenna (for plane)
2.4ghz xbee pro usb for groundstation

You will also need the picoblade connectors, and precrimped cables.
