Deane,
Double check the IO voltage levels in the datasheet for the Maxstream
modem. The I/O is 3.3V (but 5V tolerant, meaning TX will drive 3.3V
out, and accept 0-5V in) on the philips LPC2148 (Tiny13 1.1 cpu). If
your I/O from the Maxstream is 5V TTL then you are safe to interface
directly to the Tiny13.
