You didn't mention which version of Pan you're using, so I'll assume
version 0.14.0, which is current. From the "Edit" menu, Preferences
should bring up a box with various tabs in it. The first tab,
"Behavior", contains options under "Automatic Downloads" that control
whether Pan should get new headers when it starts up. I think No. 2,
"Download new headers from subscribed groups when starting Pan", is the
default, but turning it off (and #3, too) should make things better.
