It was so easy and also in cvs.txt:

cvs -z3 co -APd -r pan-0-11-fix -d pan-0.11fix pan
cvs -z3 co -APd -r pan-0-12-fix -d pan-0.12fix pan

and (not tested)
cvs -z3 co -APd -d pan-head pan

now it is just:
cd ~/cvs/pan-0.11fix
cvs -z3 update -APd


(sad thing was that yesterday evening the archive was so slow that I couldn't 
get a byte from it, so I could only try a few things for the first time this
