Follow-up Comment #29, patch #9980 (project octave):

Sorry. I probably wasn't clear. `fromJSON` should *not* call `unicode2native`.
Instead, the user (in the case of comment #21: Philip) must make sure that
they call the function with valid strings.
Imho, it is ok if an error is thrown if the function is called with invalid
strings.
