I have read and understand how I could have used only vectors.
I hope to have some time to look and understand comment #8 and comment #9

It looks like you are seeing some good corner cases to test.
As you said s.o. was a good starting point.
If you get to it before me there would be no issues.

States specifically use haversine for small distances.
If your results are robust then the code can be cleaner.
