Follow-up Comment #1:

I had to perform considerable editing as to style and better error handling.
Please take note of those changes.
If you try do follow that style I can treat your patches much quicker.

Note that Matlab only accepts a scalar for "flattening", which I copied as it
made parameter validation and the actual code a lot simpler.

I also have the strong suspicion that you don't run your functions yourself -
otherwise you would have noted some code errors and invalid tests yourself.
