Well, "interesting" is slightly understated ... :-)

Did you edit and save d.m when opened the first time via edit.m? If so,
is there a change in file permissions?
And you said it is not gedit related; but is it related to a custom
editor or does this also happen with the internal editor

It happens with the internal editor

-rw-rw-r--  1 doug doug         4 Nov  8 15:24 tt1a.m
-rw-rw-r--  1 doug doug         4 Nov 14 15:10 tt1 (copy).m
-rw-rw-r--  1 doug doug         4 Nov 14 15:10 tt1.m

It crashes with tt1.m and tt1 (copy).m but is ok with tt1a.m
the only difference among these files is the date!!!
I used ghex to look at them and they are the same.

If I create a new file with gedit separate from octave then this new file works ok

So the date seems to be the problem!!!!
Don't ask my why or how cus I don't know.
