Those software packages Microsoft gives away may be free as in price,
but not free as in freedom; they don't give the user the four freedoms.

Also the mingw and cygwin kits are excellent even though the initial
step might be rough for those not familiar with both win32 and GNU.
Also, install a decent terminal emulator, the one windows provides is
worse than useless.
