Sorry I came to this discussion a bit late.
When I needed a 2D contour plot so that I could "hold on" and
plot other 2D structures on to the same graph, I created the
contour() function attached. I changed the syntax slightly to
make it more uniform to the mesh() function. In some sense I
feel like this is the contour() function as it should have been.

It's worked well for plotting contour lines and gradient vectors
in a multivariable calculus class.
