Follow-up Comment #24, bug #63848 (project octave):

got it. By empty i meant something like 'git merge -s ours' which should do a
merge and then completely ignore any incoming changes . it sort of would work
out like Rik's option 2. 

the mean in default is now quite different from that in stable, so even with
such simple changes we'll see what it thinks.
