Follow-up Comment #1, bug #62552 (project octave):

Based on bug #60882, it was indeed a conscious decision to apply that spacing
rule to all binary operators. So this bug is only about why it does not
trigger the error for i and j. Are they being parsed as complex constants
instead of variables?
