Follow-up Comment #42:

After this change, the "**" and ".**" operators are marked as  deprecated.

Closing as fixed, since I think the original problem has been fixed.

If we want to continue the discussion about what to do for the compound OP=
assignment operators, we can do that in the discourse discussion here:

 I copied the text from comment #39 there since it should help understanding
the current situation with command syntax parsing vs. operators in Octave that
are not available in Matlab.
