Follow-up Comment #14:

retitling this bug to indicate that the current state of the problem includes
the function needing to be renamed (for matlab compatibility and naming issues
with the function now pushed to the statistics package), as well as general
performance concerns. 

I believe the current state needs:
(1) short term - a function rename for the optim version of the function,
and/or (2) a complete rework to implement the matlab 'fit' function that maybe
could borrow some of the code from optim's expfit.
