Follow-up Comment #16, bug #55178 (project octave): Thank you for your nice suggestion John. A good idea but unfortunately not the intended solution. I tried your patch. It is somewhat nicer because you do not end in this useless print_usage.m file opened in editor. The console output is still the same, but unfortunately the debugger is not entered at all. That means no access to variable contents and no chance to do interactive debugging.
