Follow-up Comment #28:

I agree that the possible advantage of changing global/persistent
initialization does not outweigh the possible pain that introducing a possibly
breaking change would have.
Having two different syntax variations that do the same thing is probably more
confusing than the current (cleaner) syntax. Additionally, that would add the
possibility that it might clash with a future syntax extension by Matlab.
Imho, the current behavior and syntax is clear enough and a positive
difference to Matlab. So, I agree that we should keep it.

The situation might be different if Matlab should decide to introduce
global/persistent initializations with incompatible syntax at some point in
the future.

For now, I'll close this report as won't fix.
