Follow-up Comment #9, bug #38466 (project octave):
Still the same for me with Octave 6.2 (tested May 2nd, 2021).
octave:7> a = ones (2,2,2);
octave:8> b = ones (2,1);
octave:9> a .*= b
error: .*=: nonconformant arguments (op1 is 2x2x2, op2 is 2x1)
