Follow-up Comment #1, bug #60493 (project octave):

If my understanding is correct, the logic that checks whether a function is
out of date only applies after returning from a script or a function call, to
the interactive prompt. In other words, I think the working assumption is that
a user would be editing function files, and not self-modifying code.

If you run the example interactively, it works as expected.

So maybe the docs should be updated to emphasize that this feature depends on
interactive use.
