Follow-up Comment #5, bug #60430 (project octave):

Yes I tested the scripts with png images and no it did not spawn new terminals
on linux. 
Maybe that is just a side effect of the Qt  Application being launched. What
if you change the first line of the script to "#!/opt/bin/octave -qf
--no-gui-libs"

This should avoid the Qt application and maybe fix the issue.
