John, thanks for testing and for the feedback. I will try to use a focus proxy
for the filter line edits. The problem also occurs without the new feature
when switching to the widgets by shortcut.

Regarding the other "feature": I can not reproduce this on Debian Buster with
Gnome. Does this only happen when a specific widget of octave has focus?
