Follow-up Comment #9:

There are a lot of subtle issues here.  I can see, and indeed verified, that
adding the CAO function that you posited allows the code example from this
report to compile.  However, I don't feel that I have enough knowledge of
Octave's internals to say whether this is a good/bad/neutral addition to
Octave.  Probably only jwe can make that decision.
