Follow-up Comment #47:

Making this change was a bit more complicated than I thought it would be
because argument parsing and actions on the VARS map were mixed together.  I
checked in a couple of patches to separate parsing from actions:

Then another one to skip adding DL_LDFLAGS to the default value for LDFLAGS
when linking a stand alone programs:
