Follow-up Comment #15, bug #59277 (project octave):

I tested the supposed fix a bit further with the real dataset that I use in
one of my projects. We can ignore the section in which I propose to apply
regexp to the complete string cell array. It doesn't work.

So back to the solution I previously proposed. That too works with my formula
test sheet (Excel2019 stringTest2.xlsx). 

I can't think of a situation where the output of the regexp would be a cell
array with multiple indices. The proposed solution simply takes the first
index, which so far seems to work in every test sheet I have tried. As far as
I can tell, the bug report bug #51512 doesn't seem to provide any reason to
think this may not work. Philip, do you have any examples which would yield an
output of the regexp with multiple cell array indices?
