Follow-up Comment #34, bug #59228 (project octave): Again, I still haven't looked into how the reference counter works. So, I can't tell if or why that counter should or should not reach 0 for nil_rep. But since a similar change seems to have avoided the previous crash, does the attached patch avoid the crash from comment #31?
