Follow-up Comment #17, bug #58956 (project octave): So it looks like the "single precision difference" idea was a red herring. I wonder what the real limiting factor is here... The problem with the last command you showed is the long standing bug #32980. It might be that solving that bug - which in itself is probably quite a large project - would relax the error condition for the bug here... It is nice to read that you are making some progress on understanding the transformations.
