I tried to reproduce by running the test suite in gdb "make check
RUN_OCTAVE_OPTIONS=-g" repeatedly. But it looks like the crash never occurs in
the debugger (or I was just unlucky). 
However, my gcc is version 9.3.0. But even with that version I've seen the
occasional crash when running the test suite. Unfortunately, these happened
when I didn't run in a debugger.
Is there any way to get any additional information when a program crashed in
Ubuntu 20.04 (like the system log on Windows)?

Also looking on which buildbots failed, I'm starting to doubt whether the
crashes depend on compiler or version.
