Follow-up Comment #8:

Yes, this is expected at this point.  Someone has to have a definitive
interest in fixing this bug and provide a first attempt at a patch.  In the
meantime, you can always use isvarname() to guarantee that the variable names
you want to use will be acceptable to Octave upon a later re-load.
