Thanks for the changeset - I'm actually working with the dev version as of ...
a couple of weeks ago and only just saw your changes to legend.m. When I run
your example code with my legend function, I still get the error 

error: get: unknown uipanel property colormap


You're right that neither my example nor yours throw an error in 5.1. I also
looked into the legend.m which is used by the 5.1 release - the bit where I
got the error in the dev version (_## Also inherit colormap_ etc) isn't in
there at all.
