Follow-up Comment #4, bug #57255 (project octave):

I think it's fine to have this behavior produce an error.  It is worse to
accept, but modify the syntax, without giving the programmer any indication.

Also, as mentioned the motivation was a workaround to handles to nested
functions which has already been resolved.
