Follow-up Comment #22, bug #56952 (project octave):

I backed out two previous changesets here:

and pushed this simpler change:

I still don't think this is a complete fix, or that it will always avoid
problems, and am still struggling a bit with how to properly close the
interpreter and release all resources.
