Follow-up Comment #7, bug #57198 (project octave):

I see, OP is on 4.4.1...

But this is how I can trigger the problem on current dev:

Delete the ~/.config/octave folder

Start octave, the editor is tabbed in a pane together with command, variable
editor and documentation widgets and it keeps ok like this after every
restart.

Problem starts once you move the editor to its own pane.

When octave is closed then it is shortly visible, that the editor pane is
closed before all the others.

After restarting octave the editor now stays closed, even if it is moved back
into its original position in a tab of the pane with command, doc, etc.

This is a diff between the initial octave.ini, created after a first run and
the .ini after only having moved the editor to its own pane:
