Follow-up Comment #1, bug #57013 (project octave):
This can also be viewed as a manifestation of bug #57005, in that we are using
the print routines from the interpreter for rats() and those routines insert
extra information about columns, insert extra blank lines ('\0') between
blocks of output, etc.
The two bugs together suggest the entire algorithm needs to change.
