Follow-up Comment #1:
Version 4.4.1 is very old and no longer supported. However, I tried running
the code on that same version on a 64-bit Kubuntu machine that I have and it
runs fine.
Most likely there is something odd about the hardware of your machine, or
Lubuntu hasn't compiled and packaged Octave correctly.
Please try the latest stable version (5.1) which is available in a debian file
format.
