Follow-up Comment #1:

Q.1: Does Windows tell you that Octave has crashed? or does Octave silently
(and apparently "gracefully") shut down by itself?

Q.2: Did you try to restart Octave after that? maybe a few times?

Sometimes I see Octave crashing w/o any apparent reason as well, *seemingly*
more often after reinstalling Octave. FYI I use Octave mostly on Windows 7
Professional (home) & -Enterprise (at work), rarely on Win10.
I simply restart Octave again, usually it works fine that second try and keeps
on working fine thereafter also in next invocations.

I wonder what the cause is - maybe dlls left in memory or maybe dlls still not
released my malware checkers? New entries in the qt-settings file that haven't
been initialized?  search me.
All that counts for me is that Octave works fine afterwards.
