Follow-up Comment #33, bug #43651 (project octave):
I didn't do anything that could improve this situation: we don't have a
fallback mechanism, so if the character is missing in the target font, then
this bug will show up.
FreeSans, the default font that is shipped with Octave, does have the diameter
character (U2298) and thus by default any Windows install of Octave 5.1 (or
even 4.4) should display this symbol properly.
@Harmut: Are you sure you are not using a custom font setting? Can you force
the use of the default font:
text (0.5, 0.5, '\0', 'fontname', '*');
