Follow-up Comment #2, bug #56720 (project octave):
This is very likely to be a local configuration issue as this has never been
reported before. It might be settings in your OS (Ubuntu 19.04), or it may be
whoever packaged Octave in to a Snap package.
Does any system() command have this issue? For example,
[sts, out] = system ("ls")
