Follow-up Comment #3, bug #56700 (project octave):

The Matlab documentation for gunzip
(https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/gunzip.html) says


gunzip(gzipfilenames) extracts the archived contents of each file in
gzipfilenames to the folder containing gzipfilenames


so it is possible that this is why we didn't do this earlier.  Matlab has one
convention for untar, unzip and another convention for gunzip which seems
rather stupid.
