Follow-up Comment #6, bug #56270 (project octave):

I believe that --disable-readline now also disables the GUI because without
readline, we don't currently have a way to process events when Octave is
waiting for input at the command prompt.

I've spent a little time looking at the terminal widget replacement.  I hope I
can get something preliminary that we can try/discuss/work on together
relatively soon.
