Follow-up Comment #6, bug #56155 (project octave):

I am neither pretending that the issue you are seeing is correct behavior, nor
am I looking for a workaround. I just want to make sure where the problem
exactly occurs. A fix of the internal "File/Exit" menu would be completely
different from a fix of the window manager's menu.

And yes, closing the main window exits the related application on my system.
