It should be identical to Markus' change except in the method of handling
optional arguments.

In the changeset on stable, there are only additions to the public interface
so I think this is safe.

We'll also need my additional change for the callback stack, correct?  It's
this change:


Is it OK to remove the data member from the class declaration?  It's private,
and only used inside the .cc file so I would think yes, but I'm not an expert.
 If not, the data member can stay, we just won't use it.  Let me know and I
can make that change as well.
