Follow-up Comment #4, bug #55669 (project octave):

There are several extensive bug reports related to this issue.  Please be very
specific on what platform you are using and what framework.  (For example,
KDE's Oxygen was a problematic setup.)

Also, investigate if you are able to drop outside the main dock window then
grab and drag back into the main window.  Or is there no way to reattach other
than press the upper right button?

There is also double clicking in the sub-widget's header.  That is supposed to
automatically float the widget.
