Follow-up Comment #3, bug #44659 (project octave):
Actually, a more interesting test would be if Matlab accepts char values.
stem (1:3, ['A', 'B', 'C'])
If they do, then Octave can just use isreal() to validate inputs. Otherwise,
one has to use a combination such as:
isreal (X) && ! ischar (X)
or
isnumeric (X) || islogical (X)
