Follow-up Comment #6, bug #42980 (project octave): I understand your point but I doubt that it is that simple to keep track of all possible situations with changing states of all widgets. Attached please find a patch with the approach of saving the widget that previously had the focus among the tabbed widgets. It does not yet include a solution for the case that a widget is manually added to already tabbed widgets. When this is done, no more information is available on the previously active widget in this tabbed stack.
