Follow-up Comment #5, bug #44391 (project octave): I think that problem is solved with pattern rules in GNU Make: https://www.gnu.org/software/make/manual/html_node/Pattern-Examples.html#Pattern-Examples Unfortunately, automake doesn't generate pattern rules and I don't know that it is worth overriding the built-in rule from automake for this purpose.
