Follow-up Comment #11, bug #44174 (project octave):
What rik5 comment about fonts could be relevant. If X is having a problem
finding a font in the terminal emulation code, no characters would appear.
Given your setup is a remote connect, might any possible error messages to
stderr be lost in the ether?
