Follow-up Comment #3:

Confirmed here, using gnuplot built from current cvs head (reports version as
5.0 patchlevel rc1).

Since an earlier version of gnuplot works with Octave and the bleeding edge
5.0 prerelease doesn't, you might want to involve the gnuplot developers and
see what has changed and where this should be addressed. You can get Octave to
generate the intermediate output that is piped to gnuplot if you need for
debugging.
